Violent Sex Offender Convicted of Registry Violations

Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen’s Child Abuse Unit obtained convictions against a violent sex offender who violated the terms of the sex offender registry. Trevon Scott Barcus, 29, was convicted of three counts of Violation of the Violent Sex Offender Registry and one count of Violation of Community Supervision for Life. Judge Scott Green revoked Barcus’ bond and set the case for sentencing on March 26.

In a one-day trial, Assistant District Attorney Nate Ogle and Acting Assistant District Attorney Emily Carnder explained to the jury that in 2010, Barcus was convicted of Attempted Aggravated Sexual Battery in Scott County, Tennessee. At that time, he was ordered to serve a sentence and placed on the Violent Sex Offender Registry and Community Supervision for Life. When Barcus was released from prison on April 1, 2019, he moved to Knox County, staying at the Gateway Hotel on Asheville Highway. On April 18, 2019, Tennessee Department of Correction Officer James Paschke discovered Barcus was actively using a smartphone to utilize social media applications and an email account he never disclosed to officers pursuant to the sex offender registry requirements.

At sentencing, Barcus faces one to two years for each conviction. The sentence for the Violation of Community Supervision for Life must run consecutive to the sentence imposed for the Violation of the Violent Sex Offender Registry. Additionally, Barcus has a federal detainer for violations of the federal sex offender registry.
