Stepfather Convicted of Raping Child
Prosecutors in District Attorney General Charme Allen’s Child Abuse Unit obtained multiple convictions today against a man who raped his stepdaughter. Doyle Wayne Mason, Jr., 37, was convicted by a jury of thirty-six counts, including eleven counts of Rape, eleven counts of Incest, eleven counts of Statutory Rape by an Authority Figure, and one count each of Aggravated Sexual Battery, Sexual Battery by an Authority Figure, and Solicitation of a Minor. Judge Steve Sword set the case for sentencing on March 23. The jury assessed the maximum fine on each count for a total fine of $540,000.
In a three-day trial, Assistant District Attorneys Rachel Russell and Joanie Stewart explained to the jury that Mason became the victim’s stepfather when she was three years old. Mason began sexually assaulting the victim several years ago when she was eleven years old. He then started raping the child from the time she was thirteen until she was fifteen. The victim’s mother finally learned of the abuse when she saw explicit text messages that Mason sent the victim and found a receipt for a promise ring that Mason gave to the victim. Knoxville Police Department Investigator Patty Tipton interviewed Mason who admitted sexual activity with the victim and stated he wanted to have children with the victim.
Because of the nature of the offenses, at sentencing, prosecutors will seek the maximum sentence of one hundred and ten years in prison.
