Road Rage Shooter Taken into Custody
Convicted shooter Rodney Lee Scott, 63, was taken into custody today upon being sentenced for convictions obtained by prosecutors with DA Charme Allen’s Major Crimes Unit for a road rage incident that occurred on December 16, 2013. Scott was convicted by a jury of Attempted Voluntary Manslaughter, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Aggravated Assault, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Public Intoxication. At today’s sentencing hearing, Assistant District Attorney Kevin Allen asked Judge Scott Green for the maximum punishment allowed under the law citing the violent nature of the crime and the fact that Rodney Scott had no hesitation about committing a crime when the risk to human life was high. Judge Green gave Scott the maximum sentence length for each offense, but ran the sentences concurrent with each other and ordered the defendant to serve one year in the Knox County Jail as a split confinement instead of serving the entire sentence in prison.
At a three-day trial in May, ADAs Kevin Allen and Molly Martin presented evidence about an altercation that started when Scott swerved his vehicle into the lane of traffic occupied by a motorcyclist, then fled the scene. During the flight, Scott reversed his vehicle into oncoming motorcycles, forcing one of them off the roadway into a ditch. The motorcyclists followed Scott to his house and waited on deputies to arrive to report the incident. While waiting on deputies, Scott exited his house with a pistol in each hand, entered onto the public roadway where the victims were waiting, and started firing at the victims. One victim was shot and fell to the ground bleeding. Scott continued to shoot him, standing over the victim and firing two more rounds into his back. Both victims survived and testified at trial.
