Ex-Fiancée Convicted of Rape and Assault
DA Charme Allen announces that prosecutors in the Domestic Violence Unit obtained convictions against a man who raped and assaulted his ex-fiancée. Deangelo Malik Rogers, 29, was convicted of Aggravated Rape, Aggravated Assault, and Assault. Judge Emily Abbott set the case for sentencing on February 20 where Rogers faces fifteen to twenty-five years in prison without the possibility of parole.
In a four-day trial, Assistant District Attorneys Sean Roberts and Ashley McDermott explained to the jury that on February 24, 2023, Rogers went to his ex-fiancée’s apartment off Western Avenue. The victim repeatedly refused Rogers’ advances despite Rogers possessing a handgun. Ultimately, Rogers raped the victim, and the victim was too afraid to flee the scene. The next morning, the victim tried to get away from Rogers, stating that she needed to go to Walmart to purchase contraceptives. The victim drove to Walmart, and Rogers followed her. Once at Walmart, Rogers got into the victim’s car and assaulted her again, striking her in the face and strangling her. After going into Walmart, the victim was able to get back to her car. Rogers followed her on the interstate until the victim eluded him and called 911. Knoxville Police Department officers responded to the victim’s location, began the investigation, and then located Rogers waiting at the victim’s apartment.
“The judge and jury believed this victim who came forward to testify and hold her abuser accountable,” said DA Allen.
Aggravated Rape is a Class A felony that carries a punishment between fifteen and twenty-five years in prison without the possibility of parole. Assistant Victim Witness Coordinator Leah Graves and Legal Secretary Erin Morrison aided in the prosecution of this case.
