Domestic Violence Defendant Convicted at Trial
Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen’s Domestic Violence Unit obtained convictions against a defendant who strangled his girlfriend and then said it was her fault. Jerrick Orlando Davis, 24, was convicted of Aggravated Assault, Vandalism, and Domestic Assault. Judge Kyle Hixson set the case for sentencing on September 9.
In a one-day trial, Assistant District Attorneys Heather Good and Christy Smith explained to the jury that on December 20, 2018, Knox County Sheriff’s Office Officer Carson Kiser responded to a disturbance at a residence on Lovell Road. At the scene, Ofc. Kiser spoke with the victim who stated that her boyfriend, Jerrick Davis, kicked down the door to her bedroom. Once inside, Davis headbutted the victim and strangled her. Davis then punched the victim in the nose. Officers observed drops of blood in the apartment as well as a broken mirror and several holes in the wall. The victim was also able to make a recording after the assault and before Davis fled the scene wherein Davis tells the victim that the assault would not have happened if she had stopped talking.
“Over the last several years, more warrants have been taken out charging domestic-related crimes that any other offense in Knox County,” said DA Charme Allen.”On average, our law enforcement partners respond to a domestic call every thirty minutes.”
Aggravated Assault is a Class C felony carrying a punishment between three and six years. At the sentencing hearing in September, prosecutors will ask that Davis serve the maximum sentence in prison based on the nature of the offense and his prior criminal history in Blount County, including a conviction for Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Robbery and multiple convictions for Assault.
