Crips Gang Member Convicted in Lonsdale Shooting

Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen’s Career Gang Unit obtained multiple convictions against a gang member who robbed and shot a man in Lonsdale. Joshua Derrell Hurt, 19, was convicted of Especially Aggravated Robbery, Attempted Voluntary Manslaughter, and Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony. Judge Steve Sword set the case for sentencing on May 31 where Hurt faces a minimum of fifteen years in prison without the possibility of parole.

In a four-day trial, Assistant District Attorney Phil Morton explained to the jury that on May 8, 2016, Hurt set up a robbery on Burnside Street in Lonsdale after he saw the victim with a large amount of cash. Hurt and the victim were friends so the victim initially thought Hurt was joking when he demanded money. It became clear that Hurt was serious, and the victim tried to run before Hurt shot the victim five times and took $500 cash.

“This conviction could not have been possible without the cooperation of the community who came forward to help put this violent offender behind bars,” said DA Charme Allen.

Hurt has been classified as a member of the Crips criminal street gang. Especially Aggravated Robbery is a Class A felony that carries a punishment between fifteen and twenty-five years without the possibility of parole. At sentencing, prosecutors will seek an enhanced sentence due to Hurt’s gang affiliation and the nature of the offense.
