Prosecutorial Externship Provides Real-World Experience to Law Students
The District Attorney’s Office is proud to collaborate with the University of Tennessee College of Law and Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law to offer law students a unique opportunity for real-world courtroom experience. Under Tennessee law, these students are permitted to serve their communities as Acting Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) under the supervision of experienced and sworn prosecutors. This hands-on role enables students to litigate various hearings in front of General Sessions and Criminal Courts, where they gain invaluable insight into the justice system.
For most students, this experience strengthens their commitment to pursuing careers in public service. Acting ADAs not only develop critical litigation skills but also deepen their understanding of what it means to represent the people of Tennessee. The program has a long history of success, with many externship students transitioning into full-time positions as Assistant District Attorneys upon graduation. Some of these former externs have risen to become judges in Criminal Courts and the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, reflecting the program’s long-term impact on the state’s legal community.
