Impaired Driver Convicted of Killing Three People

DA Charme Allen announces that prosecutors in the DUI Unit obtained conviction against an impaired driver who killed three individuals, including his wife and unborn child.  Jonathan Jones, 22, was convicted of three counts of Vehicular Homicide, two counts of Vehicular Assault, and six counts of Reckless Endangerment.  Judge Hector Sanchez ordered Jones to serve twenty years in prison without the possibility of parole.

In a plea hearing, Assistant District Attorney Mitch Eisenberg explained to the court that on June 21, 2024, Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Fuson responded to a two-vehicle wreck on Raccoon Valley Road.  On scene, the investigation showed that Jones was traveling eastbound when he crossed the center line and struck the victims’ vehicle head-on.  Witnesses stated that prior to the crash, Jones had been driving recklessly, passing other vehicles on a double-yellow line.  All occupants of both vehicles were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.  In the victims’ vehicle, two occupants were severely injured and recovered, but one victim died as a result of the crash.  In Jones’ vehicle, his wife, who was eight months pregnant, and his unborn child were also killed as a result of Jones’ actions.  The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime lab showed that Jones’s blood contained hydrocodone, oxycodone, alprazolam, diazepam, nordiazepam, oxazepam, and tetrahydrocannabinol.

“We aggressively prosecute DUI cases to deter impaired driving because it so often leads to tragedies like this,” said DA Allen.

Vehicular Homicide is a Class B felony that carries a punishment from eight to twelve years.  In an effort to combat impaired driving, Tennessee law requires defendants convicted of Vehicular Homicide to serve 100% of their sentence with no possibility of parole.  Assistant Victim Witness Coordinator Lauren Ward and Legal Secretary Jennifer Stout aided in the prosecution of this case.
