Bloods Gang Member Convicted of Attempted First Degree Murder
Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen’s Career Gang Unit obtained multiple convictions today against a member of the Bloods street gang. Following a three-day trial, Nathan Garfield Flemming, IV, 23, was convicted of two counts each of Attempted First Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Robbery, Carjacking, and four counts of Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony. After the jury returned their verdict, Judge Bob McGee set the case for sentencing on July 21.
At trial, Assistant District Attorney TaKisha Fitzgerald explained to the jury that on December 26, 2013, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a shooting on Cedar Avenue in North Knoxville. Once on scene, officers discovered that one victim had been shot five times and another victim had been shot twice. Both were transported to UT Medical Center for emergency surgery. Another victim told police that Flemming entered the residence brandishing a pistol and put the gun to the victim’s head. Flemming also grabbed a Glock pistol that was sitting on the kitchen counter in the residence. One of the victims tried to confront Flemming who shot him once. After the victim fell to the floor, Flemming advanced, shooting the victim four more times. Flemming then ran outside and demanded a neighbor’s car at gunpoint. The neighbor fought with Flemming and was shot twice in the arm. Flemming then fled in the second victim’s vehicle.
“”Gang members who commit such violent acts will receive no leniency from this Office,”” said DA Charme Allen.””If you have so little regard for human life, you deserve to be locked up for as long as possible.””
Attempted First Degree Murder and Especially Aggravated Robbery are Class A felonies carrying a punishment between fifteen and twenty-five years in prison. Aggravated Robbery and Carjacking are Class B felonies with a punishment range between eight and twelve years. Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony carries a mandatory six-year sentence that must run consecutive to the dangerous felony during which the firearm is employed. At sentencing, prosecutors will ask for an enhanced sentence due to the nature of the offense and the fact that Flemming is a member of the Bloods criminal street gang.
