Street Fight Stabbing Leads to Conviction
Prosecutors in District Attorney General Charme Allen’s Career Gang Unit obtained convictions today against a woman in the Rollin 20s Crips gang who stabbed a man in the back with a kitchen knife during a street fight. Briasha Marie Williams, 21, was convicted of two counts of Reckless Aggravated Assault. Judge Bob McGee set the case for sentencing on July 22.
In a two-day trial, Assistant District Attorney TaKisha Fitzgerald explained to the jury that on March 12, 2015, a fight broke out involving Williams outside an apartment at 239 Bell Street. That fight ended, but a second fight quickly broke out. The victim was holding one of the fighters back after the second fight ended when Williams emerged from an apartment with a large kitchen knife and stabbed the victim in the back. The victim spent a month in the hospital before recovering from his injury.
“Even without the benefit of the gang enhancement statute that was recently overturned, this Office will continue to aggressively prosecute gang members,” said DA Allen.
Reckless Aggravated Assault is a Class D Felony that carries a punishment between two and four years. Prosecutors will ask for the maximum sentence because Williams is a member of the Rollin 20s Crips criminal street gang.
